The last time I was in touch I shared the first painting I’d done based on memories of my grandmother, “Emily’s Dream #2.” Here’s “Emily’s Dream #1.” In this piece Emily is in her Chicago dining room where she’s about to hang the last piece of a mural depicting flowers, a fancy little house, and the mountains of the Poland that she left behind. She doesn’t want to forget the first place she loved.

You see the lighted bookcase on the left with some of the family books, including the Bible on the bottom shelf and the parrot statue that sometimes changed location, the floor with the floral rug, the oak framing and molding that outline the room Emily stands in. The cherry tree that grows in Poland on the right becomes the cherry tree growing in her Chicago front yard on the left. The blue house is hers. Here in the house that Felix built they raise five creative children, grow a lush garden, and become part of a South Side neighborhood. You see Emily’s love of flowers and birds.

About her dress: My grandmother made her own clothes and while the family was doing well before the Depression things were different afterwards. The Koscielskis were back on their feet with a different mindset. Frugality. One of Emily’s favorite places to shop was Goldblatt’s bargain basement. Her sense of humor was showing in the galactic print she chose for a new dress. I was a young girl when she wore this dress and I thought it was pretty funny. And a little brave.
